Care of Canvas Fabrics For residential awnings, it is usually sufficient to just hose down your awning once in a while. Use a gentle nozzle spray rather than a hard spray. You will see dirt run off. Doing the underside with a clean soft bristled broom is usually all that is needed because most of the dust will settle on the top. This is the single best thing you can do to prolong the life of your awning. The reason is that dust particles can get trapped in the weave of the fabric and will cause wear from abrasion over time. Fabrics that have been neglected will usually become very brittle and can be torn like a piece of paper very easily. If the awning is really dirty, as in commercial awnings which are more exposed to more soot and grime, then scrub the awning with a soft bristle brush using a very mild soap solution. The less scrubbing the better. A very thorough rinsing with a gentle spray is most important. Spray until you don't see soap in the water runoff. Don't use a high pressure sprayer, you will deplete the fabric of any protective coatings which were used in the manufacturing process. |
